Flip any text upside down, like ʇxǝ⊥ uʍoᗡ ǝpısd∩, and paste it into Instagram, TikTok, Discord or a message. Choose letters that show on every phone or the closest Unicode match, see how X counts it, and flip upside-down text back to normal.

Screen readers read these characters as phonetic symbols or skip them, and search won't match them, so keep important words in plain text too.
Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
Upside-down text is text written with characters that look rotated 180°, placed in reverse order so it reads correctly when you turn the screen around. "Upside Down Text" becomes ʇxǝ⊥ uʍoᗡ ǝpısd∩.
There is no upside-down font. Each character is a separate Unicode character that happens to look like a turned letter, mostly phonetic symbols such as ɐ and ʇ, plus look-alikes from math, other scripts and the Lisu alphabet. Because it is plain text, you can paste it anywhere text is allowed.
Type or paste your text
The upside-down version updates as you type. Press Example to try punctuation, numbers and two lines.
Pick a style and character set
Choose Upside down, Flipped letters, Each word, then Works everywhere for any device or Closest match for the most accurate letters.
Copy and paste it
Copy the main result or any of the 6 versions below it. To read upside-down text, switch to Flip back to normal.
"Hello World 2026" in each style and character set:
| Style | What it does | Works everywhere | Closest match |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upside down | Turns the whole text 180°, so it reads normally when the screen is turned around. | 9ᄅ0ᄅ plɹoM ollǝH | 9↊0↊ pꞁɹoM oꞁꞁǝH |
| Flipped letters | Turns each letter but keeps left-to-right order, so it reads in place. | Hǝllo Moɹlp ᄅ0ᄅ9 | Hǝꞁꞁo Moɹꞁp ↊0↊9 |
| Each word | Turns each word on its own and keeps the words in their original order. | ollǝH plɹoM 9ᄅ0ᄅ | oꞁꞁǝH pꞁɹoM 9↊0↊ |
Upside down also reverses the order of lines, just as turning a page around would. Flipped letters is handy when you want the text to stay readable left to right for a quick joke.
Every character the generator uses, with its code point and Unicode block. Closest match swaps in true turned letters for 15 letters and digits; in the default set, "Upside Down Text" is ʇxǝ⊥ uʍoᗡ ǝpısd∩, and in Closest match it is ʇxǝꞱ uʍoꓷ ǝpᴉsdꓵ.

Words and numbers like these are called strobogrammatic, and they are the starting point for rotational ambigrams. The old calculator trick works the other way: type 0.7734, turn the calculator over, and it reads hELLO. Explore more in the Ambigram Generator.
Anywhere that accepts free text works. Usernames and handles don't, because they only allow a short list of plain characters.
| App | Works in | Won't work in |
|---|---|---|
| Bio, name, captions, comments, DMs | Username (letters, numbers, periods and underscores only) | |
| TikTok | Bio, name, captions, comments | Username (letters, numbers, periods and underscores only) |
| X (Twitter) | Posts, bio, display name | @handle (letters, numbers and underscores only) |
| Discord | Messages, display name, server nickname | Username (lowercase letters, numbers, periods and underscores) |
| WhatsApp, iMessage, Messenger | Messages and status | Nothing, though old phones may show boxes |
| Posts, comments, messages | Profile name, where unusual characters may be rejected |
How it looks depends on the reader's fonts. If a friend sees empty boxes, send the Works everywhere version instead.
X allows 280 characters per post, but counts most characters above U+10FF, and every emoji, as 2. Lowercase flips are mostly IPA letters that count as 1, while capitals and digits often use symbols that count as 2.

Flip back to normal reads the characters from both sets here, plus the variants other flip tools use, and turns the order around again.

When you control the layout, rotating real text looks perfect, works with every letter and stays accessible.
| Where | How | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Web pages (CSS) | transform: rotate(180deg) | Real text, so it stays searchable and readable by screen readers. |
| Microsoft Word | Put the text in a text box and set its rotation to 180° | Best for print, cards and signs. |
| Google Docs | Insert > Drawing, add a text box, rotate it 180° | The drawing is placed in the document. |
| Canva, Photoshop, Figma | Rotate the text layer 180° | Use for images and graphics. |
| Tool | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Upside Down Text Generator (this page) | Rotates text 180° | ʇxǝ⊥ uʍoᗡ ǝpısd∩ |
| Mirror Text Generator | Reflects text left to right | ɿoɿɿiM |
| Backwards Text Generator | Reverses order, keeps letters | txeT sdrawkcaB |
| Ambigram Generator | Finds words that survive a rotation | SOS, NOON, SWIMS |
| Year | What was added |
|---|---|
| 1993 | Unicode 1.1 already includes the IPA letters most flips rely on, such as ɐ, ɥ, ɯ, ɹ, ʇ and ʎ. |
| 2003 | Unicode 4.0 adds Phonetic Extensions, with the turned i (ᴉ) and small turned R (ᴚ). |
| 2008 | Unicode 5.1 adds the capital turned A (Ɐ). |
| 2009 | Unicode 5.2 adds the Lisu block, the Fraser alphabet that uses 15 Latin capitals turned upside down, giving ꓭ, ꓷ, ꓩ, ꓤ and ꓵ. |
| 2014 | Unicode 7.0 adds capital turned K (Ʞ) and T (Ʇ). |
| 2015 | Unicode 8.0 adds turned digits two (↊) and three (↋), first proposed for base-12 counting. |
Newer characters need newer fonts, which is why Works everywhere sticks to symbols that have been around longest.
