All 7 gothic styles
Gothic letters are Unicode symbols, not a font, so they paste anywhere plain text goes. Numbers and punctuation stay as typed. Screen readers and search may not read gothic letters as words, so keep names, links, and hashtags in plain text.
A gothic font generator swaps each letter of your text for a Unicode character drawn in blackletter, the heavy, angular style of medieval manuscripts and early printing. "Gothic Font" becomes 𝕲𝖔𝖙𝖍𝖎𝖈 𝕱𝖔𝖓𝖙 or 𝔊𝔬𝔱𝔥𝔦𝔠 𝔉𝔬𝔫𝔱.
Because the result is text, not a font file or an image, it pastes into bios, usernames, captions, and chats where you cannot pick a font.
This generator uses Unicode's Fraktur and Bold Fraktur alphabets, adds Gothic initials, spaced and mixed styles, and can write in Wulfila's 4th-century Gothic alphabet. Everything runs in your browser.
Type your text
All 7 gothic styles update as you type. Names, titles, and short bio lines work best.
Pick a style and decoration
Click a style to preview it large, and frame it with ✠, †, ⸸, ☾ ☽, or ⚔ if you like.
Copy and paste
Copy one style or all seven as a numbered list. Each style shows how much of X's 280 character limit it uses.
Each example is "Gothic Font". The last column shows what Back to plain gives back.
| Style | Example | How it is built | Weight on X | Back to plain |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plain | Gothic Font | Ordinary ASCII letters. | 11 | — |
| 1. Fraktur | 𝔊𝔬𝔱𝔥𝔦𝔠 𝔉𝔬𝔫𝔱 | Mathematical Fraktur blackletter, with ℭ ℌ ℑ ℜ ℨ from Letterlike Symbols. | 21 | Gothic Font |
| 2. Bold Fraktur | 𝕲𝖔𝖙𝖍𝖎𝖈 𝕱𝖔𝖓𝖙 | Heavier Mathematical Bold Fraktur, the classic Old English look. | 21 | Gothic Font |
| 3. Gothic initials | 𝕲𝔬𝔱𝔥𝔦𝔠 𝕱𝔬𝔫𝔱 | A Bold Fraktur first letter on every word, regular Fraktur after it. | 21 | Gothic Font |
| 4. All caps | 𝕲𝕺𝕿𝕳𝕴𝕮 𝕱𝕺𝕹𝕿 | Every letter as a Bold Fraktur capital, for short titles. | 21 | GOTHIC FONT |
| 5. Gothic mix | 𝔊𝖔𝔱𝖍𝔦𝖈 𝔉𝖔𝔫𝖙 | Letters alternate between Fraktur and Bold Fraktur. | 21 | Gothic Font |
| 6. Spaced Fraktur | 𝔊 𝔬 𝔱 𝔥 𝔦 𝔠 𝔉 𝔬 𝔫 𝔱 | Letter-spaced Fraktur, the way blackletter printing shows emphasis instead of italics. | 31 | Gothic Font |
| 7. Gothic alphabet | 𐌲𐍉𐌸𐌹𐌺 𐍆𐍉𐌽𐍄 | Transliterated into Wulfila's 4th-century Gothic alphabet, Unicode U+10330 to U+1034A. | 19 | gothik font |
Gothic alphabet has no capital letters and no c, v, or y, so Back to plain gives gothik font: c comes back as k, and words return in lowercase.
Every Fraktur and Bold Fraktur letter, ready to copy one at a time. Unicode has no Fraktur digits, so numbers stay plain.

Five Fraktur capitals were already in Unicode's Letterlike Symbols block, used in math for things like the real part ℜ and imaginary part ℑ of a number. Unicode leaves their slots in the math Fraktur alphabet empty, so the generator uses the older characters. Bold Fraktur has no gaps.

Long before blackletter, "Gothic" was a language. Bishop Wulfila built its alphabet in the 4th century, mostly from Greek letters, to translate the Bible. Unicode encodes all 27 letters at U+10330 to U+1034A. Each letter also served as a number.
| Letter | Name | Latin | Number | Code point |

The Gothic alphabet style writes th as 𐌸 and hw as 𐍈, uses 𐌺 for c, and 𐍅 for v and y. Examples: Gothic → 𐌲𐍉𐌸𐌹𐌺, the throne → 𐌸𐌴 𐌸𐍂𐍉𐌽𐌴, whisper → 𐍅𐌷𐌹𐍃𐍀𐌴𐍂.
Blackletter type never developed a separate italic. Printers emphasized words by spacing out the letters, called Sperrung in German. Spaced Fraktur turns "Gothic Font" into 𝔊 𝔬 𝔱 𝔥 𝔦 𝔠 𝔉 𝔬 𝔫 𝔱, with wider gaps between words.
Decorations frame each line. Here is "Raven" in Bold Fraktur with each one.
Choose Back to plain in the generator and paste the text. It works in four steps:
| When | Event |
|---|---|
| 4th century | Bishop Wulfila creates the Gothic alphabet to translate the Bible from Greek into the Gothic language. |
| Early 6th century | The Codex Argenteus, or Silver Bible, is copied from Wulfila's translation, probably in Ravenna. It is now at Uppsala University Library. |
| Late 12th century | Blackletter book hands, called textualis or textura for their woven look, develop across Europe. |
| c. 1455 | Johannes Gutenberg prints his 42-line Bible in a textualis blackletter type. |
| 15th century | Italian Renaissance humanists begin calling blackletter "Gothic", meaning barbaric, in contrast to the roman letters they preferred. |
| 1513 | Johann Schönsperger prints Emperor Maximilian I's prayer book in Augsburg in a type now considered a precursor of Fraktur. |
| 1941 | On January 3, Martin Bormann's decree falsely labels Fraktur "Schwabacher Jewish letters" and makes roman type the standard in Germany. |
| 2001 | Unicode 3.1 adds both the Fraktur and Bold Fraktur math alphabets and the Gothic block for Wulfila's alphabet. |
