Unicode monospace letters may be read out one by one or skipped by screen readers, and search may not match them. For anything people need to find or read aloud, use the inline code or code block formats, which keep normal letters.
Monospace text is text where every character takes up the same width, like on a typewriter or in a code editor. Because i and m are equally wide, letters line up in neat columns.
You can get it in two ways. Chat apps such as Discord, Slack, and WhatsApp show text in a code font when you wrap it in backticks, like `Hello World 123`. Apps without code formatting, such as Instagram, TikTok, and X, need Unicode monospace characters instead, which look like π·ππππ πππππ π·πΈπΉ wherever you paste them. This generator makes both and runs in your browser.

Unicode has monospace versions of the capital letters, small letters, and digits only. They sit in the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, added in Unicode 3.1 in 2001.

There are no accented monospace letters, so "CafΓ© dΓ©jΓ vu" becomes a monospace letter followed by a combining accent. Most apps draw the accent above the letter, and Back to plain turns it into the original word.
Chat apps donβt have tables, but a code block shows every character at the same width, so padded columns stay lined up. Align a table pads each column for you, right-aligns numbers, and wraps the result in a code block.

It splits columns on commas, tabs, pipes, or runs of two or more spaces, and counts Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters and emoji as two columns wide, as most code fonts draw them. For WhatsApp, copy the WhatsApp version, which wraps the table in three backticks on both sides.

Typewriters gave every letter the same width because each key moved the carriage the same distance. Code editors and screenplays kept the look.

Screenplays still use 12-point Courier because it prints 10 characters per inch and 6 lines per inch, which makes one page come out at roughly one minute of screen time.
