Formatting codes for apps that support strikethrough
Strikethrough text has a horizontal line through the middle, like c̶r̶o̶s̶s̶e̶d̶ ̶o̶u̶t̶. It shows that words have been deleted or are no longer true while keeping them readable, which is why it is used for old prices, finished tasks and edits.
Word processors and chat apps add strikethrough as formatting, but most social media fields only accept plain text. Unicode strikethrough gets around this: a combining character, U+0336, is placed after every letter and drawn through it, so the line is part of the text itself and stays when you copy and paste.

With the line drawn through spaces, the phrase looks like one continuous strike: o̶l̶d̶ ̶p̶r̶i̶c̶e̶. Without it, each word is struck separately: o̶l̶d̶ p̶r̶i̶c̶e̶. These characters have been part of Unicode's Combining Diacritical Marks block for decades, so most devices can show them.
Where an app has its own strikethrough, use it. Where it doesn’t, paste Unicode strikethrough.

Markdown tildes only turn into a line after you send the message, and they must touch the text: ~~ text ~~with spaces inside doesn’t work. Using two tildes in WhatsApp or Slack, or one in Discord, shows the tildes instead.
Every crossed-out character is really two: the letter and the line. "Sale ends today" is 15 characters, but S̶a̶l̶e̶ ̶e̶n̶d̶s̶ ̶t̶o̶d̶a̶y̶ is 30, and X counts it as 30 of the 280 allowed in a standard post. Bios and display names fill up twice as fast, so cross out only the words that matter.
The generator shows the length and the X count under the result. Turning off the line through spaces saves one character per space.
Show the old price next to the new one: $̶9̶9̶ $49. Make sure the new price is clear on its own.
Cross off finished items: b̶o̶o̶k̶ ̶f̶l̶i̶g̶h̶t̶s̶, pack bags.
Show what changed without hiding the original, a common habit in edited posts and release notes.
Say the quiet part and take it back: I love s̶l̶e̶e̶p̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶i̶n̶ early mornings.
Amendments often show deleted words struck through and new words underlined.
Screen readers may not announce the line, so don't rely on it alone to change meaning.
On a website you control, use real markup instead of Unicode: the HTML <del> element for deleted text, <s> for content that is no longer accurate, or the CSS text-decoration: line-through. The text stays searchable and is easier for assistive technology to handle.
